Rainbow Bee-eaters are Australia's only species of bee-eater. They are common throughout Australia, but they become most visible during breeding season in spring. In Brisbane, my hometown, the best time to see them is between August and November along the banks of the Brisbane River where they make use of the soft river sand to build their nests.
I have spent the past several years photographing these beautiful bee-eaters at just one location in Brisbane. Their beautiful colours, constant foraging for flying insects and interactions with each other have made for stunning photography.
The photographs below are a small snapshot of some of the images I have been able to capture. All the images shown below were taken using either a Canon 5Ds or Canon R5 combined with a RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. I have also used 1.4x and 2x extenders to add some additional range to the lens when needed.
If you have spent time photographing Rainbow Bee-eaters, or want to learn how to photograph them, feel free to get in touch. I would love to hear from you.
Cheers,
Russell
